The Story Behind NCIC
Northern California Islamic Council is a peer-to-peer network of advice and support for Muslim non-profits with an aim to provide a united Muslim voice to the community at large. The Mosques and Muslim organizations in Northern California serve more than half a million Muslims. NCIC aspires to leverage the collective wisdom of a truly representative body with clergy and lay leaders from a very diverse Muslim community.
In a religious context, unity is obligatory among Muslims. There is a popular modern saying: United we stand, divided we fall. This small phrase conveys a big message; the message of unity. Unity is very important in any society, any group and any organization in order to achieve the goals of that particular entity. And Islam stands atop when it comes to unity. Islam commands unity among its followers. Praying in congregation (and Friday prayers, Eid prayers etc.) is an example of advocacy of unity. Gathering of millions of Muslims every year in Makkah for performing Hajj in the lunar month of Dhul Hijjah is one of the greatest examples of unity being commanded by Islam.
The Glorious Quran reminds us:
And hold fast, all together, by the rope which God (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves; and remember with gratitude God’s favor on you; for ye were enemies and He joined your hearts in love, so that by His Grace, ye became brethren;and ye were on the brink of the pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus doth God make His Signs clear to you: That ye may be guided. (The Glorious Quran 3:103)
